Being active improves quality of life. The Presidential Active Lifestyle Award, also known as PALA+, is a program that challenges kids and adults to be more active. PALA+ challenges us to be physically active, five days a week, for six weeks.

Shellie Pfohl is executive director of the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition.

“In addition, we’ve added the nutrition component, hence the plus so it’s PALA+, encouraging you to set a nutrition goal for each of those six weeks.”

Fruits and vegetables are essential. So is drinking more water, and less sugar-sweetened drinks.

“It’s really about feeling better. On the more longer term, it’s going to help reduce our risks for heart disease, some cancers, stroke, osteoporosis, diabetes, and the like.”

Statement from HHS Assistant Secretary for Health Dr. Howard Koh

Millions of Americans have chronic viral hepatitis, but up to 75 percent of those infected do not know it.  The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ action plan for Combating the Silent Epidemic of Viral Hepatitis designated May 19 as the first-ever National Hepatitis Testing Day.  This day is part of a larger government-wide initiative to educate people about viral hepatitis and to encourage everyone to talk to their health care provider about whether they are at risk.

The prevalence of viral hepatitis in the United States is staggering. Thousands of Americans die every year from hepatitis-related liver disease and liver cancer. There are now lifesaving treatments available that can limit disease progression and prevent cancer deaths.

In order to increase the number of people who get tested for viral hepatitis, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has launched a new online Hepatitis Risk Assessment tool, which the Surgeon General and I are promoting through a series of public service announcements.  This online tool will assess an individual’s risk for viral hepatitis and generate a summary of recommendations for testing and vaccination that people can print and take to their doctor to discuss.

Our goal is that this risk assessment tool will raise awareness about this silent epidemic among members of the public, as well as the health care community. We are hoping all of our partners will help us share information about this exciting new tool and encourage people to use it.

FOOD ALERT – Shellfish from Korea

Important Information for Food Distributors, Retailers, and Food Service Operators Regarding the Sourcing of Molluscan Shellfish from Korea

Oysters, clams, mussels, and scallops from Korea should be removed from the market

On May 1, 2012, the FDA removed all Korean certified shippers of molluscan shellfish (oysters, clams, mussels, and scallops) from the Interstate Certified Shellfish Shippers List (ICSSL), following a comprehensive FDA evaluation that determined that the Korean Shellfish Sanitation Program (KSSP) no longer meets the sanitation controls spelled out under the National Shellfish Sanitation Program.  FDA’s evaluation of the KSSP found significant shellfish growing area deficiencies including:

  • ineffective management of land-based pollution sources that can impact shellfish growing areas;
  • inadequate sanitary controls to prevent the discharge of human fecal waste from fish farms and commercial fishing and aquaculture vessels operating in and adjacent to shellfish growing areas; and
  • detection of norovirus in shellfish growing areas analyzed by FDA during the evaluation

Because of inadequate sanitation controls, the molluscan shellfish harvested from Korean waters may have been exposed to human fecal waste and have the potential to be contaminated with norovirus.

Norovirus – What is a Norovirus?

Advice for Consumers:

Consumers who have recently bought molluscan shellfish and are concerned that it may have come from Korea, should contact the store from which it was purchased and ask where the shellfish were harvested.  Consumers can check the label on packaged (bagged, boxed, canned, etc.) seafood to see if it is from Korea. If it is not clear where the product is from, consumers can call the manufacturer to find out. Molluscan shellfish from Korea and products made with molluscan shellfish from Korea should be thrown out.

FDA will post on its website any recall notices it receives from companies identifying specific products that contain molluscan shellfish harvested from Korea.

No U.S. illnesses from the consumption of Korean shellfish have been reported in 2012.
